Our History
Savannah Friends of Music (SFOM) began when the Savannah Symphony Women's Guild (SSWG) was forced to disband following the demise of the Savannah Symphony in January, 2003. On May 23, 2003, ninety persons attended an organizational meeting led by Lynne Davis, and fifty persons became charter members. Bylaws were written and officers selected, with Lynne Davis serving as the founding President of the newly-formed 501 (c) (3) stand-alone non-profit organization. Melissa Emery served as president for four years. Lynne Davis returned to the Presidency in 2010, and remains our President today.
SFOM's membership nears 300, and we have raised and disbursed over $460,000 in fulfillment of our mission.
In 2004, we created a puppet program that introduces elementary school children to the instruments in a symphony orchestra. Following every show, each child is given a coloring book depicting the puppets and instruments from the performance.
Money to fund these commitments is raised through "Parties à la Carte," a series of parties held from January through May, and "Rhythm and Style," an annual fashion show held in April. Both of these fundraisers continue traditions initiated by the SSWG.
In May 2003, SFOM partnered with Armstrong Atlantic State University to implement the Armstrong Atlantic Youth Orchestra program. Students from elementary through high school participate in this ensemble, and SFOM continues to be the primary source of funding for this organization.
